What Really Happens During a Directed Voiceover Session? A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Most people imagine a directed voiceover session as a simple process.

The client joins a Zoom call, gives a few notes, you record your lines, and everyone moves on.

While that's often true, every once in a while you experience a session that's completely different—and incredibly fascinating.

I recently wrapped up a directed session that gave me a rare opportunity to watch the entire production process unfold in real time. Instead of simply recording my voice and sending the files off to be edited later, the production team was actually cutting the commercial together while I was recording.

It was one of those "peek behind the curtain" moments that most voice actors never get to see.

Most Directed Sessions Follow the Same Workflow

Typically, a directed session happens over a platform like Source-Connect or Zoom.

The process usually looks something like this:

• The client and director join the session.

• You record multiple takes of each line.

• The engineer records your audio.

• The production team edits everything later.

As the talent, you rarely get to see what happens after your performance.

You deliver the audio, thank everyone for their time, and eventually receive the finished commercial weeks later.

This session was completely different.

Watching the Commercial Come Together Live

Instead of waiting until after the recording session to edit everything together, the video editor was assembling the commercial as we worked.

I'd record a line.

Within seconds, he'd drop that take directly into the timeline.

Everyone on the call could immediately watch the commercial with the updated narration.

That allowed the entire creative team to judge:

• Timing

• Emotion

• Pacing

• Music placement

• Graphics

• Scene transitions

...all in real time.

As a voice actor, it's incredibly valuable to see how your performance affects the finished piece.

Source Nexus: Taking Remote Sessions to Another Level

This session used Source Nexus, another product from the same company that created Source-Connect.

While Source-Connect is designed primarily for high-quality remote audio recording, Source Nexus allows everyone involved to collaborate more seamlessly during production.

The biggest advantage?

You can actually watch the commercial being edited while you're recording your lines.

That gives immediate feedback about whether a read fits the visuals or if adjustments need to be made before moving on.

Every Word Matters

One thing that stood out during this session was how much attention everyone paid to individual words.

At one point, the team discussed whether a line should say:

• "...was there."

• "...answered the call."

• "...was right there."

Each version communicated the same basic message.

But emotionally, they felt different.

That tiny wording change affected the overall tone of the commercial, so we recorded multiple alternate versions.

It's a great reminder that voiceover isn't just reading words.

It's helping tell a story.

Sometimes Your Favorite Take Isn't the One They Choose

As voice actors, we're constantly judging our own performances.

We often think:

"That one wasn't very good."

Then the client surprises us.

During this session, there were several moments where my favorite take wasn't the one the creative team selected.

Instead, they preferred another version that felt more natural within the context of the video.

This happens all the time.

The lesson?

Don't become overly attached to your own opinion of a performance.

You're only one member of a much larger creative team.

Why Directors Ask for Multiple Takes

If you've never participated in a directed session before, you might wonder why clients ask for:

• Take A

• Take B

• Take C

Even when all three sound very similar.

The answer is simple.

They're giving themselves options.

Sometimes one version fits the timing better.

Sometimes another works better with the music.

Sometimes a completely different emotional read unexpectedly becomes the winner once it's paired with the visuals.

Having multiple choices gives editors flexibility.

Timing Is Everything

One aspect many beginning voice actors underestimate is timing.

During this session, after nearly every take, the editor would immediately place the recording into the commercial and check whether it fit the available space.

Sometimes we needed to:

• Speed up slightly

• Slow down slightly

• Add emphasis

• Remove pauses

• Tighten phrasing

These weren't acting problems.

They were editing problems.

The voice still sounded great—but it had to fit the picture.

Tiny Changes Can Make a Big Difference

One particularly interesting discussion centered around a simple tagline.

We experimented with:

• Slight pauses

• Different emphasis

• Faster delivery

• Slower delivery

• Alternative inflections

On paper, the changes looked insignificant.

In the finished commercial, they completely changed the feel of the ending.

That's one reason professional voice actors record multiple variations, even after the client already likes a read.

Sometimes the best version isn't discovered until the editor starts assembling the final spot.

Why Professional Sessions Move Quickly

One thing newer voice actors often notice when watching experienced talent is how efficiently sessions run.

That's because preparation happens long before anyone joins the call.

Professional voice actors typically arrive having already:

• Reviewed the script

• Researched pronunciations

• Tested audio levels

• Warmed up their voice

• Organized recording templates

When the director gives a note, they're able to adjust immediately.

That keeps the session moving and saves everyone time.

Seeing the Bigger Picture

What made this session especially enjoyable was getting to witness every stage of production.

Instead of only focusing on my performance, I could watch:

• The editor trimming clips

• Music being adjusted

• Graphics lining up

• Timing being refined

• Alternate reads being tested

It was a reminder that voiceover is only one piece of a much larger creative puzzle.

Everyone on the production team contributes to making the final commercial successful.

Final Thoughts

Most voice actors never get to watch a commercial being built while they're recording it.

Getting to see the editing happen live was an incredible learning experience.

It reinforced something I've believed for years:

Great voiceover isn't just about delivering a great read.

It's about collaborating with producers, directors, engineers, editors, and clients to create something that tells the story in the best possible way.

Every adjustment, every alternate take, and every tiny timing change helps shape the final product.

That's what makes directed sessions so valuable—and so much fun.
